The Big Trip began to germinate last year: a combination of London dragging us down, everyone around us popping out kids, a long-held fascination with overland travel, and my boyfriend and I needing excuses to quit our jobs. I’d been working in the film industry for seven years and knew I’d had enough – but what next?
People kept asking “If you could wave a magic wand and do anything at all, what would it be?” to which I would give the increasingly exasperated response “Travel the world and write about it, but that’s hardly a viable option”. But mention a dream enough and it begins to take shape . . .
So in the summer of 2015 I waved goodbye to my stable career, had my gallbladder removed (an unrelated venture but one which almost scuppered the whole thing and delayed our departure by several weeks) and, on 12th October 2015, we boarded the Hammersmith & City line and headed to Berlin.
To read about our journey thus far, here it is in chronological order. Click the thumbnails below for each post (but bear in mind that they open in a new internal window because I can’t make my WordPress theme behave itself – so I suggest right-clicking and selecting “open in new tab”). You can either keep this window open to select the next one, or navigate using the arrows at the bottom of each post.
